Tweet Your Trash

Computational information design

Tweet Your Trash utilizes action script 3.0 to create an information visualization out of a crowd-sourced data set. I was interested in tracking how much trash students consume while on campus. This started a limited investigation which involved asking my peers to “tweet their trash”. Consumers self reported their waste on Twitter, using the tag #cmutrash. Data was parsed to distinguish the kind of trash, like “cups”; the consumer, and over how much time each consumer self-reported waste.

twitter feed with hash tag

The user may roll over a colored dot to see what kind of trash is represented by that particular color and how many of that kind of trash consumers threw away. By clicking on the dot, the user may see who consumed the trash, the other waste generated by that consumer, and the number of days in which that consumer produced his or her trash. By hovering over the “consumed” dots, which are larger and uniform in color, the user may see what other kinds of items were thrown away by that particular consumer. Clicking the bar will return the interface to its original state.
